His mom loves him like crazy. His uncle Hondo is a fun housemate, even though he's maybe a little too addicted to pro wrestling and Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
Equally for the neighbors, Zane only has two: friendly Mr. Ortiz, who grows superlative secret chile-pepper varieties in his garden, and Ms. Cab, who works as a phone psychic and pays Zane to assistance her out. What's not to similar?
And did I mention the volcano in Zane's backyard?
That'southward right. Zane has his very own volcano. He and Rosie spend a lot of fourth dimension climbing around on it. Recently, they even found a hush-hush archway that leads inside. . . .
Yep, life is good!
Er, except that Zane was born with mismatched legs. One has ever been shorter than the other, so he walks with a limp and uses a pikestaff. He's learning to bargain, though, and is a crazy-fast hobbler.
Oh, and also . . .Zane but got accepted to a new individual school. He doesn't want to go, but his mom is insisting. Class starts tomorrow.
Then there's the accident—Zane sees a small airplane crash into the mouth of his volcano. He was close enough to glimpse the pilot'south face . . . and either it was a very skilful Halloween mask, or the airplane pilot was an alien zombie monster.
On top of all this, in that location's a pretty new girl in town— Brooks—who warns Zane he'due south in mortal danger. Merely Brooks doesn't exist, according to the school records. And how does she know who he is, anyway?
Before long, Zane discovers that naught in his life is what he thought. At that place's a reason he was born with a limp. There's a reason he's never met his begetter—a mysterious guy his mom fell in beloved with on a trip to the Yucatán. Something very strange is going on in Zane's volcano, and Brooks claims it'due south all tied to some ancient prophecy.
How much practice you know nigh the Maya myths? Did you know the Maya have a goddess of chocolate? (Dude, how come up the Greeks don't get a goddess of chocolate? No fair.) The Maya also have shape-shifters, demons, magicians, giants, demigods, and an underworld that may or may non be accessible from the back of a local taco shop.
J. C. Cervantes is most to take you on a trip yous will never forget, through the darkest, strangest, and funniest twists and turns of Maya myth. Y'all will meet the scariest gods you can imagine, the creepiest citizenry of the underworld, and the almost astonishing and unlikely heroes, who accept to save our world from being ripped autonomously.
Maya myth and magic is closer than yous think. In fact, it'southward right in our backyard.
Welcome to the volcano. Welcome to The Storm Runner.

The Tempest Runner is a Center Grade Fantasy Adventure novel published through the Rick Riordan Presents imprint.
If yous aren't enlightened, the purpose of this banner is to provide a stage for diverse voices to tell stories based upon myths and folklore from their own cultures.
This action-packed book is based upon Mayan Mythology and is full of angry gods, magic, mythological creatures and a ton of adventure.
Our main character, Zane Obispo, stands out among his peers due to a limp caused by a leg that is a picayune shorter than the other.
Throughout school, Zane has had to bargain with bullies and the feelings of inadequacy that can come up when you feel like people are only seeing your differences, as opposed to the rest of you.
Despite his challenges, Zane is the sweetest babe cinnamon roll, full of expert sense of humour, love for his family and respect for his elders.
I truly fell in honey with Zane's character. I remember he is an incredible role model for young readers and, heck, even some developed readers.
Not only is Zane a bang-up character, but he is surrounded past a whole flock of amazing side characters who bring humour, dearest, depth and drama to this adventurous tale.
I don't know near you, but for me, side characters can make or pause a book. This group is fabulous and only served to raise the fun of the story.
After he witnesses a demon crash a airplane into a volcano nigh his house, Zane ends up heading out on a quest to save the globe with his new friend, Brooks, who also happens to be a shape-shifter, and his lovable Uncle Hondo.
Together these three battle scary enemies and plot incredible schemes to save all of humanity.
Through their trials, Zane discovers who he truly is and how powerful he can be.
There was a ton of activeness in this book. Literally, scene-later on-scene of edge of your seat moments that keep you glued to the pages long after 'lights out' time has come up!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves heart course stories and/or books based upon mythology.
Additionally, I remember this would be a great book for parents or guardians to read with the kids in their life.
I recollect at that place are a lot of slap-up discussions to be drawn from this book and a lot of fun that can exist shared likewise.
Overall, this is a fantastic story that volition leave you feeling like magic is not only possible, merely real.
Thanks so much to Rick Riordan Presents and Disney-Hyperion for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review.
It was such a wonderful experience, one I will exist thinking about and dreaming about for some futurity.
I actually appreciate the opportunity and promise that this series is a large success and continues on!

This volume was SO Expert!!!!! Zane was admittedly adorable and had such a groovy voice, and although there's so much more to exist explored I learned then much well-nigh Mayan mythology that I didn't know earlier. There was so much about this volume that I loved and just can't formulate into words now, but if y'all enjoy Rick's books y'all guys definitely have to pick this one up! (Also: Hispanic AND Disabled rep?? I Deceit SAY Meliorate THINGS!)(This is not a huge spoiler, but I will warn those who are weary of these things that an animal does die in the outset of the story. But, as with all middle grades I've read and then far, things plow out okay in the cease :) )

I did end up enjoying this, and it started out rather irksome. This is office of the Rick Riordan Presents. Rick doesn't know some of the other world mythologies besides, so he gear up other people to write them in his sort of universe. Here's the thing with it. I wish Rick would take just gone alee and co-written these books and used the formula he already established. The humor was missing from this story. I mean information technology does have some humor, but it'south few and far betwixt. In that location doesn't feel similar a whole lot of joy in the pages, but there is enough of teen-angst and some self-pity. Information technology is nice that our main grapheme has a handicap, and because it is and then much a focus of the main Character that it begins to feel like this self-compassion and there is some transformation of that toward the stop, but not enough. I'yard certain that is totally like real life is and how people feel, so it's actually good to take that out at that place. The reader is not fatigued in enough to Zane to really encounter things from his perspective. I felt like an outsider looking in at this earth and so much of information technology just wasn't fun.
I think information technology would have been very helpful if Rick could have infused his humor and characters and madcap situations into this story. The fun was missing and it felt like work in some ways.
Nevertheless, I was introduced to completely know mythology stories I know little most and I still want to know more. I'1000 interested in reading some more than and finding out more about these archetypes. The god of Expiry is our big bad and he is fabricated up of maggots which I detect interesting. He also smells actually bad. In that location are good ideas here and much hope, but it was only at the finish I got a little invested in the story. It felt a little like work to read at the start. There was activity and twists and turns to go along my interest, only the pacing was a fiddling slow compared to other Rick mythology stories.
I will explore more of the Rick Riordan presents stories and mythologies and I wish he would have more than to do with them equally a co-author. Just help guide them and kick upward the humor. Notwithstanding, I never would have read anything almost Mayan mythology without this book and I'm glad I got the gamble to exercise so. I hope the next book is fifty-fifty improve. There are lots of cultures with mythologies out in that location and I promise he adds a ton of them. I desire to know more. I desire to own them just to accept the references to the stories.

Nigh of my thoughts on this can be said far more eloquently by Priscilla, so I'll merely exit her review hither.Basically, I dearest the mythology aspects (plain!) and call up there were some innovative and exciting ideas. I'1000 more surprised than you that I didn't enjoy this oh then promising, beloved middle grade. ~Unpopular review incoming~Zane Obispo is a Latinx male child who walks with a cane. He'due south got a best friend name Rosie who happens to be a Boxer-Dalmatian mix and Zane likes to explore the volcano virtually his home in New Mexico. Inevitably, his story is intertwined with the Mayan gods and legends of his beloved books. Zane embarks on an adventure and faces shapeshifters (called nawals), giants, and demons on a path to cocky-discovery and to respond a call to magic that could exist in his blood.
And then why didn't I like this? Well for the most part information technology was Zane'south voice. For case, Zane has a beat out on Brooks who is a mysterious girl that introduces him to the existence of Mayan supernaturals. Zane thinks of her every bit a not-like-the-the-girls kind of love involvement. Ok, that'due south overdone by now but I tin can let that i go.
Zane is witty and curious but also he's very self-deprecating specially regarding his shorter leg and limp. One of the biggest selling points for me to pick this up was the disability representation which I constitute extremely distasteful at times. Information technology'due south hard to overlook these instances when lines like this tie Zane'south disability to a larger plot indicate. (view spoiler)["And your leg? It'southward defective for i reason only. Supernaturals and humans don't mix- information technology and so often ends desperately. Bum legs, terrible eyesight, missing fingers or toes, acrimony-direction problems." Oh so Zane's leg is lacking?! That's gross ableist language. However, this explanation is supposed to be ok because it's the missing link to his power? NO. (hide spoiler)] And then a few lines later allow'due south pile on more gross language. (view spoiler)["I have no idea who your male parent is, so don't ask me. Just he could be a nawal, a demon, a spirit guide, a dwarf…… A dwarf. Perfect. My dad could be a Maya supernatural dwarf." And if his dad were a dwarf would that be and then bad?! According to Zane it would be bad. (hide spoiler)] More than than one time Zane refers to himself or his leg as "gimp" and that's disheartening and harmful. In that location's some other example of this kind of language here. (view spoiler)[ In order to attend a subconscious party and walk amongst Mayan gods, Zane and the others vesture enchanted habiliment. This cltohing disguises so called imperfections. Brooks says "All our faults will be gone. Everyone will only see us as…. Beautiful." Bet you'll never approximate what happens to Zane's appearance. Zane's limp is gone so that his advent volition appease the gods. How is this message ok for kids?! Or for anyone really. (hide spoiler)] In the finish, Zane does accept his limp equally a part of him but there'southward still this overarching negative connation for his disability. There'south still this idea that Zane should be stock-still and that only irked me.
This book also had some pacing bug and I felt like and then many parts really dragged on. Cervantes' has a bright and refreshing imagination but something just didn't translate. This is mostly an issue of personal preference. Rosie, Zane'due south domestic dog, dies pretty early on and I recollect yous should let kids know that before they pick this up. (view spoiler)[ Rosie dies a terrible decease at the hands of a demon merely she somewhen comes back as a hell hound. (hide spoiler)]
I was then thrilled to hear nigh a own voices Latinx story based in Mayan folklore. I learned so much about Ah-puch, Hurakan, Ixkakaw, Ixtab, and Xib'alb'a. We need more than stories that feature the folklore of other cultures. Tin can authors or publishers also limit the number of stories inspired by the same ole regurgitated Greek myths? Please and thank you. I don't know why it's taken this long to have a middle grade story like this hit shelves considering those aspects of this story were fantastic! Nevertheless, information technology wasn't enough to carry the story or erase the issues I had with the inability representation. I'g sad to say that I'll be passing on the sequel.

The Storm Runner is yet another addition to Rick Riordan'south new banner, Rick Riordan Presents, with this book centering around Mayan mythology. (yes please!) In this beginning installment to a new middle grade series, we follow Zane Obispo, a thirteen year onetime latino boy who walks with a cane. He and his dog Rosie love to explore the dormant volcano right outside of Zane'southward backyard, but when Zane witnesses an incomprehensibly foreign event that makes him cross paths with a mysterious girl named Brooks, things get even weirder. Manifestly, Zane'south lineage is entirely godly, and intertwined with a prophecy that could atomic number 82 to the stop of the world.
I feel like I'g in the minority here.
Sure, in that location's a lot to love near The Storm Runner. There's disabled rep, latin american culture, mayan mythology, and some really lovable characters. Likewise, there's a lot of hot chocolate too.
So...why didn't I dearest this book then?
Well, I can't deny that J.C. Cervantes is a talented writer. She brought Zane'south voice to life, and I did bask his grapheme. Nevertheless, I can't deny that this book majorly suffers from uneven pacing. The starting time half of this volume dragged. Like, really dragged. I almost considered DNFing this at one point, and I don't often do that. Thank the gods my interest piqued halfway through this book and I decided to terminate it.
The greatest forcefulness of The Storm Runner is it'southward globe and mythology. I loved reading about the Mayan gods, and the myths and legends surrounding them. Truly, I'g so pleased with what Rick's new imprint has brought to the realm of children's books. In that location's peachy diversity, amazing cultural representation with ain-voices storytelling, and exciting adventure plots.
It's a shame, though, that I wasn't particularly attached to Zane or Brooks. Brooks, for sure, didn't really feel developed in this book. What was her character, exactly? I mean, she's fine, but I didn't feel anything for her.
I had fun with this volume, and I understand why a lot of people really dearest it. Only the pacing, and Zane's sometimes grating vocalism hindered my enjoyment of this story. Will I read the sequel? I'm not certain. The synopsis will really have to pique my involvement in order for me to pick it up.

I just kept thinking that afterward young readers experience Zane's story and read these words they will think, "I am more than than the sum of my flaws", and that is such a POWERFUL bulletin! And I loved the style the author switched to 2nd person POV to really suck the reader even further into the story!

The idea of Mayan mythology was interesting however I didn't hear much about it in the 1/3 of the book that I listened too, and even what I heard was dumped on me. The start of the book was irksome, just at the same time fast considering how short after meeting our master character nosotros are thrown into the mythology world. The writing isn't anything special and the characters felt meh. The principal character, Zane, is making some impaired decisions (view spoiler)[((trusting a girl he doesn't know that told him he's in danger, going into a freaking volcano afterwards he saw a demon, MAKING a deal with a god of decease afterward he released him… which he wasn't supposed to do.)) This book is centered on Mayan mythology and is an amazing mode to start learning about this mythology. It has Gods and Giants and Magicians and Shape-Shifters. In that location are magical items that brand you soul-travel and some that look completely flawless. Also there's a goddess of Chocolate who apparently makes the best hot chocolate healing juice e'er, which sounds astonishing but also I'chiliad a human and completely normal so of grade it would completely destroy me.
Storm Runner is a fast paced, magical book post-obit our characters as they fight demons and try to end the globe from ending. Evidently if you lot like Rick Riordan'southward books or learning nearly mythology, this book would be perfect for you lot. And even if you don't and you only like magical books that take identify in the real globe and follow a hero and so y'all will likewise like this volume.
I will say that it was more serious than I was expecting, and didn't have that normal Rick Riordan sense of humour (which makes sense because it's plainly non written by him). And it took me a couple of days to go into it, simply considering you were being introduced into the story.
But this book was amazing. The characters were all unique and it was interesting to read nearly all of them. The way the volume was written, aka the formatting was interesting, specially with information technology existence an almost frame story (information technology'south sort of one but kind of non really cause yous don't see much of the frame). Also the ending was amazing. I idea I knew how it was going to cease but I had absolutely no idea, and it left me really excited to read the adjacent book. Let me interruption it down to a few points:
Zane is non likable. In fact, he is incredibly and annoyingly rash and (I don't desire to employ this word only) stupid. Let's make a comparing hither. Percy (yes, from the PJO books) does a lot of stupid things, he does a lot of stupid decisions. Merely often if not ever, his deportment aren't really stupid, more than of surprising or unconventional. Either way, the stupid things he did actually assist him a lot because they ever end up existence successful.
Now. Zane is on some other level. He stressed me out, several times that I actually wanted to drop this volume already. The unfortunate events that happened in the book did not even need to happen at all. This is the crazy part- they tin can be easily prevented if not for Zane's decisions. I'll give a few examples:
one. Brooks. Zane trusted her immediately later on seeing her similar twice? Nevermind that he doesn't even know who the hell this girl is. Why? Because Brooks is pretty. Way to go, Zane!
2. Zane loves his dog Rosie so much just nooo he did non think twice in entering a volcano again even though he saw a possibly dangerous monster inside before. Because why non? Brooks says they have to become in (come across 1.) Nevermind that they are not prepared at all! And that they are actually discussing all the important details (similar the monster that Zane saw is really a demon runner out to harm him WHICH IS PROBABLY ALSO STILL In that location Within) while they are going further in the volcano. I don't know, Brooks? Perchance talk about information technology earlier you guys get in simply and so Zane has an idea?? Being mysterious (which I think is the quality that the author wanted the readers to feel nearly Brooks,) right now is not a cool (it actually just bellyaching me) thing to do.
And so Rosie was killed by a demon runner. Wow! Shocking.
3. I think well-nigh who read this book totally concord that Zane did non need to do that pledge. I don't need to explain why. Besides, I am pretty certain that Rosie wouldn't want her owner and beloved friend to cede his life for her. It annoys me very much every time Zane says "Brooks saved my life!" because (Are you lot kidding me?) she's totally the reason why your life was endangered in the starting time place and why Rosie died. But what am I saying, everyone will not recollect it twice and but carelessly enter a place even though inside are monsters that can harm (kill) you. Who cares? You're with a pretty girl!
I enjoyed Aru Shah and the End of Time a looot! I love that book. Cervantes is probably trying to have the same audition with Riordan's books. There's nothing incorrect with that, Riordan is basically using his influence to promote these various books on the same readers that dearest his works.
Only I don't call up Cervantes did it right. Aru Shah has a totally different vibe with the PJO books and I absolutely loved it. The Magnus Hunt trilogy, fifty-fifty within the same universe, has a totally different vibe with PJO. In the Storm Runner, I clumsily keep on feeling a downgraded version of Percy's narrative through Zane. The sarcasm is off, sometimes the humor is off likewise.
And with the label (come across I.), I think it simply reflects poorly on the author if your characters will make such bad decisions just so the plot will flow.
I merely couldn't get into this
I barely know basics nigh Greek mythology, know even less about Scandinavian one, and when information technology comes to Maya, before I came across this volume, I had no thought information technology even exists.
Here is what come books for, to make us learn, stop even though I can't say that I am an expert in Maya mythology after finishing The Tempest Runner, I can say that I know at least little about information technology.
The Tempest Runner is a middle class fantasy book that follows a 13 years former male child
I was never Miss-Know-It-All when it comes to mythology.I barely know basics about Greek mythology, know even less nearly Scandinavian one, and when it comes to Maya, before I came across this book, I had no idea it even exists.
Hither is what come books for, to make us acquire, end fifty-fifty though I can't say that I am an skilful in Maya mythology after finishing The Storm Runner, I can say that I know at least little about it.
The Storm Runner is a center grade fantasy book that follows a 13 years one-time boy Zane. Along with Zane, readers tin discover gods, creatures and legends that are part of Maya mythology.
This is ain voices novel because the author'due south origin, and it also represents variety considering our principal character is Hispanic, and he is too disabled person (i of his legs is smaller then the other one).
The story is written in first person, from Zane'due south POV.
I loved following Zane through the story, he was really interesting and had good sense of humour. I even laughed out loud couple of times, despite this not beingness a one-act.
Discovering ancient Maya gods and legends was exciting, fifty-fifty though the names (equally they are and so much different from my native linguistic communication) often made me confused, and I would forget who was who in a very short time.
However, because the writer did a good chore in bringing the states a story, it was easy to keep up.
The characters of the book were fascinating and I can see them being someone's favorite characters. I surely liked them, especially Zane.
I tin also hands imagine The Storm Runner being turned into film or tv testify.
I've read some reviews for this novels that compare it to Percy Jackson saying it is very similar to it. Since I oasis't read that series yet, I tin can't tell you if that is the case, but I tin tell you that the atmosphere in the volume did remind me of the second Percy Jackson pic (and I love those movies, in case you didn't know (and yes, I know it's an unpopular stance)).
I would recommend this book to fans of middle grade and young adult fantasy, simply also to everyone who'd like to read a story that talks about Maya mythology.
Since this is a centre grade volume, it will be like shooting fish in a barrel to follow to everyone who know aught about it.
The first few chapters were non that engaging. In that location are tension and activeness but it didn't capture me well enough. I must say, they actually confused me to the signal that I can't follow the flow of the story. I've just read on and didn't heed what is going on with the main character, who is Zane Obispo, and who really he is. And
I've started to capeesh The Storm Runner on the middle where the real adventure begins. Which I've got to know the Mayans version of gods and creatures along the way.The kickoff few chapters were non that engaging. There are tension and action but it didn't capture me well enough. I must say, they actually confused me to the point that I tin can't follow the period of the story. I've just read on and didn't mind what is going on with the master character, who is Zane Obispo, and who really he is. And what he needs to do. Zero fucks given.
But came the center part where I felt like I was tug to my core and instruct me to pay attention considering the book volition be wild. And sure it was! I don't desire to spoil but this is the point where I can't finish reading and I actually intendance most Zane Obispo, even he is an annoying child who asks a lot of question. I-want-to-know-about-him-already care. Something like that.
And it didn't disappoint. I've got to know what I need to know. Information technology was really impressive. Knowing the Mayan gods, likewise! And their powers and capabilities. Even the antagonists are well-written. I just noticed some similarities with Harry Potter and Percy Jackson on some elements merely it is probably unavoidable.
Will surely read the next ane!

The Storm Runner is quite the book. It has characters that are very likable and humorous. They easily grew on me and I establish myself having favorites quite early on on in the book. And a plus, there was an adorable domestic dog in this book, who (view spoiler)[ dies! but comes back, don't worry! (hide spoiler)] This story fits among Rick Riordan'southward books

(hide spoiler)] This story fits among Rick Riordan's books, as well as the previous book in the RR Presents serial, Aru Shah. It is an astonishing, adventurous story with high stakes that kept me on the edge of my seat during the entire time reading this. I learned much about the Mayan myths and legends, which I found so fascinating and intriguing.
I loved following the quest of Zane Obispo, a disabled Latino boy. I establish the plot fast-paced, but still laying all of the information that is needed. I love all of the details to this volume, and everything was described wonderfully. I felt like I was following along with this hazard equally if I was in the book myself. Cervantes's writing way is definitely astonishing, her prose is incredible. I found her imagination to be brilliant and bright, and information technology definitely shows in this story. I also found the dialogue of this volume to be HILARIOUS!
I definitely recommend this volume, information technology definitely seems like a middle course to me, simply it tin can be enjoyable to anyone and anybody of all ages. If yous loved any of Rick Riordan's books, you will definitely love this one too!
